Between the Ashes is a fan-made sequel for Descent: Freespace, using the community-maintained Freespace Open engine. After almost fifteen years of warfare, the Galactic Terran Alliance is exhausted. A period of relative peace has finally come to the galaxy, at the expense of Earth and countless lives. The Alliance rose to power with promises of prosperity and security. Now, its citizens ask when they're going to deliver. In a tumultuous galaxy with no obvious right answers, who gets to define humanity?

Live your space fighter fantasies

Lead your squadron through a complex story spanning years, backed by a talented vocal cast.

Between the Ashes is distributed using Knossos, the Freespace mod manager, but you don't need to own Freespace itself to play it. Once you've downloaded Knossos, open the Explore tab and install "Between the Ashes: Standalone", which will set up everything you need. Knossos can also install updates, such as our upcoming campaign, Between the Ashes: The Growing Silence.

Need help? Feel free to reach out to us on Discord, or send an email to info@btagame.com. Windows may sometimes flag Knossos as insecure; unfortunately, registering it is financially impractical for the Knossos team, but you can check out their GitHub repository if it helps put your mind at ease.

Tried BtA and want more? A wide range of people have released Freespace content on Knossos. Some mods are built on the original game, while others, like BtA, don't require it. Click around and see what catches your fancy!

Already a Freespace veteran? You can install BtA directly instead.
